Our Policy on Repairs &
Restoration
All
repairs are done on premises by Mr. Kagan. A one year guarantee is
offered on most repairs and bow rehairing.
I
do most violin-family repairs, which includes viola, cello, and bass.
I don't do top-regraduation, varnish
stripping & re-finishing, or bow re-curving. I also don't do
guitar, banjo, or mandolin repairs, even though I do build mandolins.
Call (919) 785-3204 or email me at sales@kaganviolins.com
for rates on repairs. Estimates are free.
"Turn-around" time, the time it takes to complete a job, is completely
variable, and here's why:
-
every job is a little different, and may take longer than expected.
- certain
repairs I prefer to keep overnight or longer, to make sure that it
doesn't come unglued.
- varnish
and glues need to dry, at least 24 hours and preferably 48 hours,
minimum.
So,
I can say, your job will take about 2 days, and maybe more, but it's
not absolutely guaranteed in 2 days. However, there are some things,
like bridges and soundposts that I can complete the same day if you
need them in a hurry.
Most repairs I do using the traditional heated hide glue, which is
relatively easy to undo if something needs adjusting. For situations
where a really strong join is called for I use an aliphatic resin glue
(sometimes called carpenters' wood glue) which requires considerable
effort to undo.
The tools are mostly traditional hand tools, some of which are
inherited, and others which have come from the nearby hardware store.
Old Violin Fix Ups
An old fiddle is usually worth fixing, unless it is exceptionally poor
quality. Mr. Kagan is equally willing to work on say, a $200 violin as
he is a $2,000 violin. That being said, there is a difference between
setting up an old fiddle to play and the careful restoration of a
really fine antique using "original" parts and varnish.
